The Academy Awards, or “Oscars“, is an annual American awards ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements in the United States film industry as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership. The various category winners are awarded a copy of a statuette, officially called the Academy Award of Merit, which has become commonly known by its nickname “Oscar.” The awards, first presented in 1929.

 As of 2016, eleven Indians have been nominated for a total of fourteen Oscars, five Indians of whom have won a total of six Oscars. Three Indian films have been nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Satyajit Ray is the only Indian who has received an Honorary Academy Award, and A.R.Rahman is the only Indian who has won more than one Academy Award. In 1982, The National Film Development Corporation of India was instrumental in co-producing Richard Attenborough’s Academy Award for Best Picture winning film Gandhi.

The List of Indian who won The Oscars

1) Bhanu Athaiya won Best Costume Design (with John Mollo) for Gandhi (1982)

2) Satyajit Ray received an honorary Academy Award in 1991.

3) Russell Pookutty won Best Sound Mixing (with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke) for Slumdog Millionaire (2008).

4) AR Rahman won Best Score and Best Original Song (music) for Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

5) Gulzar won Best Song (lyrics) for Slumdog Millionaire (2008). [He was not present at the ceremony to collect his Oscar.]

Except Satyajit Ray, all others worked on the movies conceptualized, produced and directed by Foreign production houses.
